DEFINITIONS:
Extra Depth is a term used to describe a particular shoe with extra volume
for the foot inside the shoe.

Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Bill In May 1993, Congress amended Medicare
statutes to provide partial reimbursement for depth shoes, custom molded
shoes, and shoe inserts or modifications to qualifying Medicare Part B
patients with diabetes. The statute allows within a given calendar year, a
qualifying patient can receive 80% of the allowed amounts for one pair of
depth shoes and three pairs of inserts or one pair of custom molded shoes
including inserts and two additional pairs of inserts.
Orthosis is a device that is used to protect, support, or improve function
of parts of the body that move. The terms orthoses and orthotics are used to
describe a wide range of devices that are placed inside the shoe. Foot
orthoses are often described as being either accommodative or functional.
Accommodative orthosis is designed primarily to accommodate a rigid foot or
foot deformity. General foot orthoses are designed to accomplish one or
more of the following: reduce shock, reduce shear, relieve areas of
excessive plantar pressure, stabilize and support the joints of the foot,
and limit motion of joints
Pedorthics is the design, manufacture, modification and /or fit of footwear,
to include shoes, orthoses and foot devices, to prevent or alleviate foot
problems caused by disease, congenital defect, overuse or injury.
Pedorthist are certified by the Board of Certification in Pedorthics, Inc
(BCP). A certified pedorthist evaluates and designs foot orthoses and shoes
for patients requiring protective support or correction due to muscle/bone
impairment, disease, or deformity.
Podiatrist specialize in medical care of the foot, ankle, and lower leg.
They must have a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM) degree from a college of
podiatric medicine.
